TUV calls on Bain to quit Parades Commission

Statement by TUV leader Jim Allister:-

“When Douglas Bain was appointed as Assembly Standards Commissioner I called on him to resign from the Parades Commission because of the obvious conflict which could arise when investigating any complaint connected in any way to a parade determination. He refused and insisted on clinging to both jobs.

“Now, the predictable has happened. Mr Bain finds himself compromised by his Parades Commission membership and is having to duck out of an investigation he should be conducting and, instead is putting the Assembly to the extra cost of appointing someone else to act in his place.

Allister Calls for Ford to Review Criminal Injury Compensation after RIRA Scandal

“The revelation that the family of a convicted criminal were paid “substantial” compensation after he was murdered by former associates in the Real IRA shows that Criminal Injury Compensation needs to be reviewed urgently.

TUV Welcomes DUP Support for Charter for Innocent Victims and Challenges DUP on ‘Combatants’ and ‘Former Political Prisoners’

“I welcome today’s news that the DUP are backing the Charter for Innocent Victims of Terrorism – albeit a full four months after other Unionists did.

“When the Charter was launched I commented:

“How can Mr Donaldson and others in the DUP claim that the Centre will contain a balanced and truthful account of the Troubles when innocent victims of Republican violence are united in their opposition to the plan and will have nothing to do with it?

“Understandably the Charter makes it clear that a project which will “provide the means for terrorists to return to the Maze as “victims”, educationalists and quite possibly tour guides – self-cleansing them of their heinous crimes” is totally unacceptable to innocent victims.

Sinn Fein Challenged on Bombs and Children

“The attack on Woodbourne Police station was wrong and has been rightly condemned. However, when one listens to Sinn Fein representatives pontificate about this their hypocrisy really is nauseating.

“Sue Ramsey attacked those behind the bombing as “irresponsible” on the BBC’s TalkBack programme and highlighted the fact that children had picked up the bomb. She then told listeners that the difference between this attack and the type of attacks carried out by the Provisionals was the lack of popular support.

“One assumes, therefore, that Sinn Fein continue to believe there was nothing wrong with planting bombs in the 1970s and at any time when their IRA did it.

“In 1973 9 year old Gordon Gallagher died when he triggered an IRA bomb in Londonderry. Last year the boy’s parents called on co-First Minister McGuinness to tell police who was involved.

“Martin McGuiness was, by his own admission, second in command in the IRA at the time of Gordon’s death.

“In February 2012 I tabled a written question to the Office of the First and deputy First Minister asking whether the Department – which has responsibility for victims’ issues – had given all possible help to the Gallagher family in their humanitarian quest to identify the murderer of their 9 year old son. The unchanging and true colours of Sinn Fein displayed over Castlederg

Martin McGuinness’ description of Sunday’s coat-trailing glorification of the murder, planned for Castlederg, as “an act of remembrance” is obscene.

“Acts of remembrance” are sacred occasions when those who fought honourably and courageously for their county are remembered with dignity; Sinn Fein’s Castlederg event is a celebration of the wicked terror of the IRA and exaltation of the death and destruction they brought to their innocent victims. There is no equivalence between the courage and sacrifice of the soldier who goes to war for his country and the bloodthirsty terrorist who skulks around in the dark waiting to shoot a policeman or a civilian in the back, or who loads up a car with explosives to blow the heart out of a town. Farcical PSNI Case Against William Frazer Thrown Out

“Once again the PSNI have brought William Frazer before the courts for alleged breach of bail and once again they have failed to have him remanded. The PSNI’s harassment of Mr Frazer has to stop and stop now. Apart from anything else these court appearances are a scandalous waste of public money.

“The repeated, failed attempts of the PSNI to have Mr Frazer returned to custody would be laughable were the issues involved not so serious. This political policing must stop immediately.  It is doing huge damage to the standing of the PSNI within the Unionist community, particularly when they compare it with the attitude adopted towards Gerry Kelly”.

Maze Prison Buildings “Likely to Provide Important Educational Opportunities” for Children

“As time goes on it is becoming increasingly clear that the concerns of innocent victims about the Sinn Fein/DUP plans for the Maze site are well founded. An answer which I received today from the Education Minister will compound those fears.

“I asked the Education Minister how his Department and schools will relate to, and use, the proposed Conflict Resolution Centre and prison buildings at the Maze site. O’Dowd responded telling me that the “Conflict Resolution Centre and prison buildings at the Maze site are likely to provide important educational opportunities for our young people”. He then went on to say that the Department could “facilitate the dissemination of materials produced by the Centre to schools” and likened this to work the Department of Education has already done with resources produced by the Imperial War Museum dealing with the Holocaust! Time for DUP to stop ducking and diving on the Maze

“Playing with words over what won’t or will be within the proposed new Conflict Centre does not address a key issue concerning the Maze.

“What is the plan for the existing prison buildings, the IRA citadel buildings of the hospital and the H block? Sinn fein has been very clear on this issue with Raymond McCartney MLA boasting, “The listed and retained buildings…will be open to the public. There will be the opportunity for the many stories of the gaol to be told” (see http://www.sinnfein.ie/contents/22471). The DUP remains silent on the issue, though Jeffrey Donaldson has insulted the intelligence of us all by saying Bobby Sands name won’t even be mentioned!

TUV Withdraws from Unionist Forum

Following a meeting of the party officers on Tuesday night and consultation with grassroots party members TUV has decided to withdraw from the Unionist Forum.
 
In a statement the party said:
 
“TUV was sceptical about the potential of the Forum to achieve anything of substance and made this clear at the outset. We were never interested in something which was merely an expediency for the moment. As the months have progressed the various subgroups of the Forum have rarely if ever met and public cynicism about the Forum and its ability to deliver anything has grown.
